The famed Trophy Table is an annual fixture, and yet the details are hazy. Who gets the awards? How many are there? What are the criteria for winning one? Will Miss Jayne ever again do the splits after her Presentation Day rehearsal curtsy? Read on and be enlightened...
FACT 1
The awards are separated into five age groups:
Baby (age 6 and under)
Junior (age 7, 8, 9)
Intermediate (10, 11, 12)
Senior (13, 14, 15)
Advanced (16+)
There are also some miscellaneous awards that anyone of any age can win.
FACT 2
There are separate awards for Woodhall Farm and Berkhamsted students.
FACT 3
Who decides who'll get each award? According to Miss Jayne: 'I send the list of awards to all teachers and they write their suggestions on. I then collate them all and make the final decisions. It's important to me that awards are given to students who most deserve them and therefore I am totally impartial. It particularly delights me when I can award something to a student for the very first time and it especially makes me happy to see a baby ballet student's name be called out and see them come up and collect a little trophy. It's not just about being the best as we have a lot of awards for effort, progress and attitude.'
FACT 4
Some of the trophies have been donated by Miss Jayne's family members, some from families who have donated an award on leaving JMDS. There are some memorial trophies too.
FACT 5
For 36 years Miss Jayne's mum took great pride in making sure all awards were undamaged, clean and shiny for their recipients. In 2019 Mrs Bishop (Miss Hollie’s mum!) took over. Tatty awards are replaced.
FACT 6
Recipients keep their awards for a year. On returning them, they get a medal: bronze if it's the first time winning, silver if it's the second, gold if it's the third. This re-sets back to bronze every time a student moves up an age category.
